THE NY TIMES RESPOND TO WHOOPI GOLDBERG

A representative for the NY Times has issued a statement clarifying the reason Whoopi Goldberg's name was left off the list. Who's at fault?
A spokesperson for The New York Times tells EW.com, "The error lies with those who are reading the story incorrectly.

"The point of the piece was not to name every black actor or actress who has been awarded an Oscar, it was to draw a comparison between the number who won prior to 2002 (the year Halle Berry and Denzel Washington won) and those who have won since.

"The story states very clearly that in 73 years, prior to 2002, only seven black actors/actresses won Oscars."

Overall, the story is still offensive because an Oscar is hard to come by. An Oscar is only given to the elite. One must perfect the craft of acting in order to recieve the prestigious award. An Oscar is the equivalence of a Grammy you know you have arrived once you recieve one. A nomination is also look upon as an advertising strategy to most companies. Which is why when one listen to the previews of a new movie the announcer always states, "Oscar nominated "or "Academy Award winner"..pay attention next time!

Oscars are not passed out everyday. In the African American community Oscars are limited. The article did point out that only 7 black actors have recieved an Oscar prior to 2002.

Sidney Poitier-Oscar
I have only question, if there are 7 listed and there have only been 13 to date, what's 6 more?

Regardless, of what the article was trying to imply I think recognition should have been given to all the great actors in the African American community that have recieved an Academy Award.

REMEMBER SIDNEY POITIER...never forget that name!

In 1963, Poiter was the first African American Actor to recieve an Academy Award. for his role in Lilies in the Field. One cannot mention an Academy Award without the mention of his name, in the African American community. He paved the way. He made us believe that one day if we wanted, we too could win an Oscar. Just ask some A-list actors! I am only stating that because the numbers are so low and because this is black history month, all of our African American winners should have been placed on the list.
